Kevin Costner Anticipates Legal Battle Over Departure from ‘Yellowstone’

  • Kevin Costner made a public statement on his departure from “Yellowstone” on Friday, according to People.
  • Costner, who is 68 years old, explained that negotiations regarding splitting season five into two parts led to his decision to leave.
  • He also mentioned that he intends to take the matter to court to resolve payment issues for the second half of season five.

Following Kevin Costner’s previous announcement about leaving “Yellowstone,” the actor has provided further details regarding his departure.

During a child support hearing on Friday, which is part of his ongoing divorce proceedings with estranged wife Christine Baumgartner, Costner explained that the decision to split season five into two parts resulted in his exit. People reported on this development.

Costner, who is 68 years old, stated that filming the series twice a year did not align with another project he is working on, a movie series called “Horizon: An American Saga.” He adjusted his schedule to accommodate the second half of “Yellowstone” season five, according to People.

“That’s a significant undertaking in this industry,” he added, as reported by the outlet.

People reported that Costner mentioned there were no scripts written for the second half of the season at the time and that the first half was still unfinished.

Costner made a final attempt to return to the show by telling his representatives to offer him any amount of money agreed upon, but “Yellowstone” declined the offer. According to People, he believed the figure discussed was $12 million.

When questioned about receiving payment for the second half of season five, Costner stated that he will most likely take legal action to resolve the matter.

Representatives for Paramount and Costner did not respond immediately to Insider’s request for comment, which was made outside regular working hours.

According to court documents from June viewed by Insider, Costner stated that he did not anticipate receiving any financial compensation from “Yellowstone” apart from “back-end contractual participation rights.”

“I will earn significantly less in 2023 than I did in 2022. This is due to the fact that I am no longer under contract for ‘Yellowstone,’ which was my primary source of income last year,” said Costner, as stated in the documents.

In 2022, Costner reportedly earned $1.3 million per episode. However, according to the June documents, the fixed amount “pay-or-play” and per-episode compensation for the series had ceased, and he had not received any participation compensation from “Yellowstone” thus far in 2023.

Prior to his departure, Costner was expected to return for the second half of season five. In the midseason finale in January, viewers saw Costner’s character, John Dutton, facing impeachment as Montana’s governor.

An air date for the second half of “Yellowstone” season five has not been announced yet.
