Kentucky Governor Refuses to Comment on Senate Replacement

Governor Andy Beshear (D-Ky.) made the decision not to engage in discussions about a potential replacement for a Senate seat in Kentucky during his conversation with reporters on Thursday.

The remarks from the Kentucky governor come in the wake of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell experiencing another moment of freezing up at a recent press event, raising concerns about his health and ability to fulfill his duties as a senator.

“There is currently no Senate vacancy,” asserted Beshear. “Senator McConnell has made it clear that he intends to serve out his term, and I trust his statement. Therefore, I will refrain from speculating about a situation that has not occurred and will not occur.”

In the event that a senator leaves office due to “death, resignation, or expulsion,” the Seventeenth Amendment permits state legislatures to grant the governor the authority to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of the term or until a special election can be held.

According to Kentucky law, the governor is required to choose an appointee from a list of three individuals submitted by the state executive committee of the same political party as the ousted senator.

A physician at the Capitol has given clearance for McConnell to “proceed with his scheduled activities” following yesterday’s incident. A spokesperson for McConnell disclosed that the senator had experienced lightheadedness as a result of the episode.

“I have consulted with Leader McConnell and discussed the matter with his neurology team. After assessing the events of yesterday, I have conveyed to Leader McConnell that he is medically fit to continue with his planned activities. Brief periods of lightheadedness are not uncommon during concussion recovery and can also be expected due to dehydration,” stated the doctor.
