Kemp Joins in Defense of Controversial 6-Week Abortion Ban Amid Backlash from Trump: An Unsettling Move

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R) has defended a six-week abortion ban following criticism from former President Trump. In a tweet posted on X, Kemp stated, “There’s nothing ‘terrible’ about standing up for life.” He further highlighted that Georgia has taken steps to protect and value life through adoption and foster care reforms, as well as combatting human trafficking.

Currently, Georgia prohibits abortion after approximately six weeks into pregnancy. The ban, which was deemed “unconstitutional” by a judge in a lower court ruling, was reinstated by the Georgia Supreme Court in November last year.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) for signing a similar ban, considering it “a terrible thing and a terrible mistake.” He expressed intentions to find a solution that would satisfy both sides. However, Trump’s remarks have faced backlash and may pose risks for him among his supporters in Iowa. A recent New York Times/Siena College poll revealed that 70 percent of Trump’s supporters in Iowa favored a state law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

In response to Trump’s comments, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (R) defended the law she signed, which also bans most abortions after six weeks. Reynolds tweeted, “It’s never a ‘terrible thing’ to protect innocent life.” She expressed pride in the fetal heartbeat bill and her neutrality in endorsing any candidate for the 2024 GOP primary race.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Reynolds stated, “I’m remaining neutral, but I don’t just want to rule it out down the road. I think it’s really important right now to encourage candidates to come to Iowa.”
