TORONTO — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, announced on Wednesday that they are separating after 18 years of marriage.

“After engaging in meaningful and difficult conversations, we have come to the decision to separate,” they shared in separate but identical statements posted on social media. “Despite the separation, we continue to be a close-knit family, filled with love and respect for each other and the life we have built and will continue to build.”

Justin Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Trudeau, 48, have three children aged 15, 14, and 9. Sophie, a former radio and television personality, is known for her advocacy in gender equality and mental health. The couple has displayed images of their young family in the past, though they have been seen together publicly less frequently in recent times. A statement from the prime minister’s office confirmed that they have signed a legal separation agreement and plan to go on a vacation together next week.
