The Palm Springs Black History Committee is pleased to announce that it will be hosting exciting Juneteenth holiday festivities on both Friday and Saturday.
“Juneteenth is not just another holiday; it serves as an important celebration and a powerful reminder of our nation’s progress,” stated Jarvis Crawford, the manager of the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center.
The event will kick off with a King and Queen Royal Pageant at 5 p.m. on Friday. The following day, a Juneteenth Celebration of Culture event will take place at the same time. These exciting events will be held at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center located at 480 W. Tramview Road in Palm Springs, as confirmed by the official statement from the city.
On Friday, participants ranging from pre-school age to high school will engage in various categories such as “Beautiful Babies,” “Tiny Tots,” “Jr. Miss,” and “King and Queen,” as announced by the Palm Springs Black History Committee. As for Saturday, the event promises live music, free food, and fun-filled activities for the entire family, according to city officials.
This year’s festivities will be even more captivating as they will showcase educational and cultural activities organized by members of the Coachella Valley and external organizations, ensuring a rich and enlightening experience for all.
“Juneteenth is a significant federal holiday observed on June 19th each year to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States,” stated Palm Springs city officials. “Originating in Texas, it was on this date in 1865, following the end of the Civil War, that slaves were finally declared free as outlined in the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.”
