Funeral services are currently pending for Judy Solomon, a renowned Israeli journalist and former six-term president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Solomon, who passed away at the age of 91 on Friday morning, was instrumental in establishing a longstanding partnership for television production of the Golden Globe Awards.
HFPA President Helen Hoehne expressed deep sadness over the loss and commemorated Solomon’s remarkable accomplishments in transforming the Golden Globes into the globally recognized award it is today. With 67 years of membership within the HFPA, Solomon’s support and leadership are truly treasured.
Originally from Romania and raised in Israel, Solomon ventured to the United States, embarking on a successful career in entertainment journalism. She contributed to various Israeli publications before joining the HFPA in 1956.
During her tenure, Solomon played an integral role in implementing significant changes to the Golden Globe Awards. Notably, she was responsible for introducing Dick Clark to the awards, which ultimately led to a long-standing television production deal between the Golden Globe Awards and Dick Clark Productions. Additionally, she facilitated the relocation of the awards show from the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel to its current venue, the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Influential in supporting foreign journalists in the United States, Solomon also expanded the HFPA’s involvement in various areas such as the arts, education, film restoration, and journalism.
Judy Solomon is survived by her daughters Donna Sloan and Deborah Solomon, son-in-law Stephen Sloan, and granddaughter Ashley Sloan.
