HBO’s John Oliver recently highlighted the actions of a Republican mayoral candidate in Franklin, Tennessee, as a reflection of the entire party’s politics, reaching from the local level to the highest positions of power.
According to Oliver, real estate agent and town alderman Gabrielle Hanson has established herself as a strong supporter of the MAGA movement.
Hanson has been involved in efforts to shut down Pride and Juneteenth celebrations. She has also received support from a white nationalist group and has faced accusations of deceit regarding a social media photo and knowledge of a potential school shooting.
“In a logical world, this woman would have withdrawn from the mayoral race in disgrace,” Oliver commented in a viral video shared online by Raw Story.
However, Oliver expressed concern that Hanson could still win the election. He believes that her numerous scandals, while seemingly exaggerated, are indicative of the behavior seen throughout the Republican party.
“This week has shown us that far-right Republicans have a stronghold on the party,” Oliver stated, referring to the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the House speaker position.
As his main topic, Oliver delved into the subject of homeschooling, taking the opportunity to take a shot at former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson.
