Joe Montana joins lawsuit against City of San Francisco for sewage flood incident

Legendary NFL player Joe Montana has joined a group of frustrated homeowners in San Francisco to sue the city after their houses were flooded with sewage-tainted stormwater. These homeowners argue that the city failed to properly repair wastewater facilities in the area, which led to previous flooding incidents. According to the lawsuit, the sewage system in the Marina area, where Montana resides, is outdated, neglected, and poorly maintained by the city and county of San Francisco. As a result, the system frequently overflows and contaminates the properties and neighborhood with untreated sewage and polluted water.

For the past two years, San Francisco residents and advocacy groups have been urging the city to address the deteriorating sewage system, as they have experienced repeated flooding in low-lying areas. Even the neighborhood where Joe Montana, the football star and former 49ers quarterback, lives has not been spared from these issues. According to Realtor, the median home prices in this exclusive enclave are $2.6 million. Moreover, the lawsuit claims that the closure of a city outfall in 2021 exacerbated the flooding problem. This outfall allows excess water to go into the bay instead of flooding the streets through manholes.

During the intense storm on New Year’s Eve, an astonishing 18.6 million gallons of untreated or partially treated wastewater overflowed from San Francisco’s sewer system, with only 2.3 million gallons able to escape into the bay, according to records from the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board. The dirty water infiltrated the plaintiffs’ properties, seeping into the soil, walls, and floors, and depositing highly contaminated sewage matter throughout their homes.

Homeowners attempted to file claims for damages against the city but were denied. San Francisco, on the other hand, argues that the catastrophic flooding was caused by an “almost unprecedented” level of rainfall, rather than neglect on their part. A spokesperson from the Office of the City Attorney stated that this storm was the most powerful to hit San Francisco in over 170 years, placing the blame on the storm itself and not the city’s infrastructure. The city is currently reviewing the lawsuit and will respond accordingly in court.
