Blues legend believes Sofyan Amrabat, the ‘bargain’ transfer option, would have been a perfect fit at Stamford Bridge instead of the £115m signing Moises Caicedo

Chelsea’s decision to sign Moises Caicedo for a club-record fee of £115m has been questioned by a former Blues legend. Frank Leboeuf believes that instead of splashing out such a hefty sum on the Ecuadorian midfielder, Chelsea should have gone for the more experienced Sofyan Amrabat at a much lower price. Leboeuf, who played for Chelsea from 1996-2001, expressed his opinion that Amrabat would have been the perfect partner for Enzo Fernandez in midfield.

In an interview with ESPN, Leboeuf wondered why Chelsea didn’t consider signing Amrabat, especially when he was available for just £30m after a loan spell at Manchester United. Leboeuf praised Amrabat’s performances for Morocco in the last World Cup and emphasized the value of his experience. Manchester United managed to secure Amrabat’s services on loan from Fiorentina, with an option to buy for £21m next summer.

While United made moves for experienced players like Amrabat, Chelsea focused on recruiting younger talents, spending over £400m on players such as Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia, and Caicedo. This has led to criticism from some fans, particularly after Caicedo’s underwhelming performances, including a mistake that led to Nottingham Forest’s goal in a recent 1-0 defeat.

Chelsea’s ambitious summer spending has pushed their total expenditure under Todd Boehly’s ownership to over £1bn in just three transfer windows. It remains to be seen if their investment pays off in the long run, but Leboeuf’s comments raise valid questions about the club’s transfer strategies.
