Former Representative Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) has recently taken to social media to share the story of his son’s battle with cancer. In a series of heartfelt posts, Crowley expressed his hopeful attitude and desire for his son to have a fighting chance after undergoing surgery.
In his posts, Crowley revealed that his son, Cullen, was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumor. This form of soft tissue sarcoma predominantly affects the abdomen and pelvic areas. The devastating diagnosis came shortly after Cullen’s graduation from the Naval Academy in May 2022, and the news has deeply impacted their family.
The former congressman shared that Cullen recently underwent a successful surgery to remove tumors from his kidney and abdomen. On X, previously known as Twitter, Crowley said, “Yesterday, Cullen underwent 15 hrs of surgery to remove cancer tumors on his right kidney and in his abdomen. He stayed strong throughout — just as he has since his diagnosis. He’s a Marine after all.”
Despite the cancer metastasizing to his skeletal system, this surgery is seen as a blessing and gives Cullen a fighting chance. He is currently in recovery and doing well, according to his father.
Crowley took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the medical team who performed the surgery and to all those who have shown their support for Cullen. He said, “We are so grateful to his wonderful team of doctors and nurses. And we are so grateful to all our family and friends here and around the world (especially in Montana and Ireland!) for their support. We would be lost without you all!”
Having served in the House for two decades before being defeated in the 2018 Democratic primary by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Crowley’s personal battle with his son’s cancer has given him a new perspective on life and the importance of optimism and resilience in the face of adversity.
