In response to the situation, US President Joe Biden has called on the Niger military to release President Bazoum. The US State Department has also ordered the evacuation of non-emergency embassy personnel and their families as a precautionary measure due to limited commercial flights. France and Italy are also involved in evacuating their citizens from Niger.

August 3, 2023 (UPI) – President Joe Biden has voiced his concern over the political unrest in Niger and called for the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum. In a statement, Biden emphasized the importance of democracy and civilian-led governance, expressing support for the Nigerien people’s right to choose their leaders through free and fair elections. The President urged the preservation of Niger’s democracy and emphasized the need to defend democratic values and constitutional order. He also highlighted the partnership between the United States and Niger based on shared democratic values.

France’s foreign ministry has reported the successful evacuation of more than 350 French citizens, as well as citizens from other countries, from Niger. Italy is also evacuating its citizens, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani personally overseeing the evacuation operations. The military leader, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, who led Niger’s presidential guards, claimed power on July 28, citing economic insecurity and corruption as reasons for the coup.
