Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chair, to Address Inflation at Economic Conference

Distinguished representatives from the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Japan are set to gather in the town.

Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Federal Reserve, will present his economic outlook this Friday, providing insights on inflation and monetary policy. Nervous investors, concerned about possible further rate-tightening in the US, will carefully analyze his remarks following the market fall last week.

TD Securities analysts commented last week, stating, “We believe this event offers an excellent opportunity for Powell to set the groundwork for the next phase of the Fed’s policy guidance, shifting the focus from expecting rate hikes to anticipating rates to remain ‘higher for longer.'”

On the corporate front, this week is relatively quiet. However, CRH, the renowned building materials giant, will announce its interim results on Thursday as it readies for its US stock-market listing.

Additionally, the leaders of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) will gather in Johannesburg this week. They aim to transform the group into a major bloc that can compete with western economies. The agenda includes discussions on potential bloc expansions, with approximately 40 countries expressing interest in joining. Among them are Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Argentina, the latter of which is currently facing a fresh economic crisis.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will be attending the event, while Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be present due to an international arrest warrant regarding alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine.

In terms of domestic news, today, the Central Statistics Office will release business demography data for the year 2021. Tomorrow, the wholesale price index for July will be published. The CSO will also reveal inbound tourism figures for June, followed by the results of its labor force survey for the second quarter of the year on Thursday. The CSO concludes the week by publishing industrial dispute statistics for the second quarter on Friday.
