Jerome M. Hauer, the inaugural director of New York City’s Office of Emergency Management, passed away at the age of 71 at his home in Alexandria, Va. He also addressed the potential Y2K digital impact on computer networks and adeptly handled terrorist threats, vermin issues, and natural disasters such as hurricanes, sinkholes, and downed trees.
Hauer’s wife, Traci L. Hauer, confirmed that his cause of death was prostate cancer.
During his time working under Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani from 1996 to 2000, Hauer earned widespread cooperation from various city agencies, as well as state and federal governments.
