During The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable, the 61-year-old actress candidly discussed her initial doubts and mental state when approached by show creator Mike White. Coolidge expressed surprise at receiving the call amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, with the filming taking place on a beach and in bathing suits.
She shared, “We were like six months into COVID, and I’d been locked up in my house in New Orleans just pigging out on these vegan pizzas. A good friend and I were doing two at breakfast, two at lunch, and two at dinner… So, I was just like, ‘No, I’m not doing this.'”
Coolidge admitted that her fear of the pandemic, coupled with her unhealthy habits, impacted her decision-making. She described adopting a “do whatever you want” mindset during the height of the pandemic, believing that life was too uncertain.
However, it was her best friend who called her out on her doubts and convinced her not to pass up the opportunity. Coolidge acknowledged that this was a common struggle for actresses – longing for their dream roles but hesitating when they finally come their way.
Other actresses present at the roundtable, including Emma D’Arcy, Melanie Lynskey, Dominique Fishback, Claire Danes, and Jennifer Garner, also shared their experiences in the industry and their aspirations for future roles. Garner empathized with Coolidge, expressing her own reservations about wearing a bathing suit on screen.
This is not the first time Coolidge has discussed how her self-image during the pandemic affected her feelings about the role of Tanya McQuoid.
