Jamaica Declares Devastating Dengue Fever Outbreak: Hundreds of Cases Confirmed and Suspected

An outbreak of dengue fever has been declared in Jamaica, with at least 565 suspected, presumed, and confirmed cases. Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness has stated that the country has surpassed the dengue epidemic threshold for July and August, and is on track to do the same for September. The dominant strain is Dengue Type 2, which was previously prevalent in 2010. Currently, there are 78 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Jamaica, and six deaths are under investigation.

Health officials have taken action against the outbreak by deploying 500 temporary vector control workers and 213 permanent workers to high-risk communities across the island.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that dengue viruses are transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. About 25% of those infected will develop mild symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, rash, and body aches. Recovery takes about a week. However, 1 in 20 people infected will experience severe dengue, which can lead to shock, internal bleeding, and even death.
