Jada Pinkett Smith Encourages Will Smith to Rekindle First Marriage for Success and Love

  • Jada Pinkett Smith reveals that she urged Will Smith to salvage his first marriage.
  • In the early stages of Pinkett Smith and Smith’s relationship, Sheree Zampino expressed interest in reconciling.
  • Pinkett Smith advised Smith to give it a try for the sake of their son and Zampino’s son.

Jada Pinkett Smith shares that she encouraged Will Smith to give his marriage with Sheree Zampino another chance, despite her own strong feelings for him.

In her new memoir, “Worthy,” released on Tuesday, Pinkett Smith wrote, “A few months after I’d really fallen for Will, he had called to announce that Sheree wanted to put the divorce aside and try to reconcile. My heart crashed.”

Prior to their marriage in December 1997, Smith was previously married to Zampino from 1992 to 1995. Pinkett Smith met Smith while he was still married to Zampino, but they didn’t start dating until after Zampino filed for divorce.

In her memoir, Pinkett Smith described this time as “complicated” and expressed her naivety about divorce and breakups.

Pinkett Smith was devastated when Smith informed her about the possibility of reconciling with Zampino due to her limited understanding of divorce.

“Hot tears spilled from my eyes, but my voice on the phone held steady,” Pinkett Smith recalled. “It occurred to me that this wasn’t about me or even us. This was really about Will and Sheree’s two-year-old son, Trey.”

Given her own childhood experiences of feeling abandoned by her parents, Pinkett Smith wanted to prioritize Trey’s well-being and encouraged Smith to try for the sake of their son.

“In my mind, I was letting go of the best thing that had happened to me in a long time,” she said. “But I knew, without a doubt, it was for the better. Two terrible weeks passed, at which point Sheree and Will both decided to proceed with their divorce.”

Despite their split, Smith and Zampino maintained an amicable relationship as they co-parented Trey. It took effort, but they were able to develop a “sisterhood” over time.

“Once Will and I got married, I kept my pledge that if I was going to be the loving bonus mom to Trey that he deserved, it was time to get past any resentments and misunderstandings that existed between Sheree and me,” Pinkett Smith shared. “I could not proclaim to love Trey without embracing his mother.”
