The San Francisco Giants have made the decision to relieve Gabe Kapler of his managerial duties after an unsatisfactory four seasons. As they search for a new manager, their attention has turned to internal candidates.
Alyssa Nakken, who is rumored to be the first woman ever to interview for a managerial position in Major League Baseball, is reportedly one of the candidates being considered by the Giants, according to The Athletic.
Nakken made history in 2020 when she became the first woman to join an MLB coaching staff as an assistant coach. She further cemented her place in history in April 2022 when she took over as the on-field coach after the ejection of the first base coach Antoan Richardson during a game against the San Diego Padres, becoming the first woman to do so. Prior to her coaching career, Nakken served as a baseball operations intern for the Giants in 2014 and was a standout player for the Sacramento State softball team.
In addition to Nakken, Giants bench coach Kai Correa, and third base coach Mark Hallberg are also said to be interviewing for the managerial role. The San Francisco Chronicle has also reported that former MLB player and current Seattle Mariners bullpen coach Stephen Vogt is a candidate for the job.
While there has yet to be a full-time female head coach in any major American men’s professional sport, the San Antonio Spurs came close with Becky Hammon, who was considered the heir apparent to Gregg Popovich. However, she opted to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA instead, where she led the team to a championship title.
In 2020, Major League Baseball made history by hiring Kim Ng as the first female general manager in a major men’s league when she joined the Miami Marlins. However, Ng recently declined her mutual option with the Marlins, ending her three-season tenure with the team.
