PARIS — Alibaba founder Jack Ma is alive and well, reassures Chinese e-commerce giant’s President at the Viva Tech conference in Paris. Ma’s status has been a subject of speculation following the intense regulatory measures imposed by Beijing on his tech empire.

“Jack is alive, well, happy, and still full of creativity. He’s teaching at a university in Tokyo while also spending more time in China,” says Alibaba President Michael Evans, responding to a question about Ma from Maurice Levy, chairman of French advertising group Publicis.

These comments reflect the ongoing interest in Ma’s activities since he and Alibaba became the target of Beijing’s regulatory crackdown.

He cares deeply about this company today, just as he did when he first started. I expect his dedication will continue as long as Alibaba and Jack Ma are here,” assures Michael Evans, President of Alibaba.

Ma’s situation came under scrutiny in November 2020 when Ant Group, Alibaba’s financial technology affiliate also founded by Ma, had to cancel its planned IPO, which would have been the largest in the world.

In 2021, Alibaba faced a $2.8 billion antitrust fine, while China’s technology sector had to adhere to new regulations covering competition and data privacy.

Ma’s absence from public view for a few months raised questions about his whereabouts.
