Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara’s Bold Move: Dismissing PM and Dissolving Government in a Landmark Reshuffle

In a significant move, President Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast has made changes to the government by removing the prime minister and dissolving the current administration, according to a senior public official who made the announcement on Friday.

The president, through a decree, has terminated the roles of Prime Minister Patrick Achi and all members of the government, exercising his constitutional powers as stated in a statement by Abdourahmane Cissé, the secretary-general of the presidency.

Ivory Coast, which is preparing for an election in 2025, has witnessed three prime ministers since 2020. Achi took over from Hamed Bakayoko, who passed away from cancer in March 2021. The previous prime minister also died in office due to an illness.

“The president expresses his gratitude to Prime Minister Patrick Achi and all members of the government for their dedicated service to the nation over the years,” Cissé stated. He added that the outgoing officials will continue their functions until later this month when a new government will be formed.

In September, Ouattara announced a ministerial reshuffle to be carried out this month after the Senate of Ivory Coast convenes and elects its new president. A subsequent appointment of a new government is expected once the Senate holds its meeting.

Achi has held the position of prime minister since April 2022, when the government underwent its last reshuffle. Initially appointed in March 2021, Achi briefly resigned in April last year when Ouattara announced plans to reduce the size of the Cabinet.
