Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu set to undergo pacemaker implantation following health scare

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to undergo a pacemaker implantation procedure on Sunday morning due to recent health issues, as reported by Israeli sources. The announcement was made through a Twitter video early Sunday morning, prior to a vote in the Knesset regarding contentious Israeli judicial reform.

“The efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement are ongoing even at this moment,” Netanyahu stated in Hebrew, according to the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN).

Pacemakers are medical devices that deliver electrical pulses to the heart chambers to regulate heart rate and rhythm, as explained by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In the video, the 73-year-old Netanyahu revealed, “A week ago, I was fitted with a monitoring device, which alerted me this evening that I need a pacemaker and that I should undergo the procedure tonight. I feel fine, but I must trust my doctors.”

Last week, Netanyahu was discharged from the hospital after experiencing severe dehydration. He had a heart monitor inserted in his chest. Netanyahu attributed his illness to lack of water and sun protection while being at the Sea of Galilee during a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Prime Minister’s office previously stated that Netanyahu continues to undergo routine tests based on doctors’ recommendations.

Netanyahu has faced criticism from Israelis regarding his proposed judicial overhaul. Over 1,100 Israeli air force pilots and aircrew declared their intention to suspend voluntary reserve duty if the overhaul proceeds.

In a letter, they expressed their concerns, stating, “Legislation that permits the government to act in such an unreasonably extreme manner would compromise the security of the State of Israel, lead to deep mistrust, and jeopardize my ability to continue and risk my life. Therefore, with great sadness and without any alternative, I am suspending my voluntary reserve duty.”
