Israeli officials outraged by ‘shameful decision’ of planned Torah and Bible-burning event in Sweden

Israel has strongly condemned the decision by Stockholm police to allow the burning of the Bible and Torah during a planned protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Sweden. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Swedish government to stop the protests, emphasizing the importance of respecting sacred books from all religions. He tweeted, “The State of Israel takes very seriously this shameful decision that damages the Holy of Holies of the Jewish people.”

Other top Israeli officials, including President Issac Herzog, have also condemned the permissions granted for the burning of these sacred texts. President Herzog expressed his heartbreak at the prospect of the Jewish Bible suffering the same fate as the Quran, which was burned in anti-Islam protests outside a Stockholm mosque last month. He called the defacement of sacred texts an act of hate and incitement, urging the world to unite in condemning this repulsive act.

Sweden’s decision has raised concerns regarding its eligibility for NATO membership. Failure to prevent Quran-burning protests and now allowing the burning of the Bible and Torah does not align with NATO’s values and principles.

Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen discussed with Israel’s ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman, the steps being taken to prevent the burning of the holy books. Cohen emphasized that burning a Torah scroll is a hateful crime that causes serious harm to the Jewish people and their traditions. He called on the Swedish authorities to prevent this despicable event and protect the sacredness of the Torah.

There has been no immediate response from the Swedish foreign ministry regarding the actions it will take to stop the burning of the holy books.

It is crucial to respect and preserve the sanctity of all religious texts, regardless of one’s personal beliefs. Such acts of defacement not only incite hatred but also undermine the values of religious freedom and mutual respect.
