Israeli embassy in Tokyo targeted in barricade ramming incident, suspect in custody

TOKYO, November 16, 2023 (Reuters) – Tokyo police arrested a 53-year-old man who crashed his car into a barricade near the entrance of the Israeli embassy, injuring a police officer. Authorities reported that the suspect is a member of a right-wing organization, and the wounded police officer is in his 20s and is expected to recover.

Israeli ambassador to Japan Gilad Cohen expressed his “shock” over the events through a social media post and expressed his gratitude to the police for ensuring their security.

An incident occurred near the embassy, an area where recent pro-Palestinian demonstrations took place in response to Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.

Tokyo residents noted that police had increased security in the area, putting up temporary barricades, amid the Israel-Hamas conflict that commenced on October 7.

This event comes on the heels of a similar assault on an Israeli embassy staffer in Beijing just a month ago.
