Israeli cabinet greenlights measure to expedite construction of settlements in the West Bank

The Israel cabinet has given its approval to a resolution aimed at expediting the construction process for buildings in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to a report by Axios. The resolution seeks to limit the control of the prime minister and defense minister in approving building plans in these settlements, thereby diminishing the influence of the United States and other nations in pressuring the government to suspend such plans. Instead of requiring multiple approvals at the political level, as was the case in the past, building plans will now only need to be approved twice. This decision has prompted the Palestinian Authority to boycott a scheduled meeting of the Joint Israeli-Palestinian Economic Committee and explore other measures to respond to the decision. Meanwhile, U.S. officials have cautioned against Israel’s expansion in the West Bank settlements, asserting that such expansion undermines efforts to achieve a two-state solution with the Palestinians. The Israeli government recently notified the U.S. of its plans to construct thousands more housing units in the West Bank settlement. The White House has expressed concern over these developments, emphasizing the need to avoid actions that hinder the prospects of a two-state solution and increase tensions.
