Israel launches major military operation in West Bank, resulting in a minimum of 8 fatalities

Multiple casualties were reported as a result of an Israeli strike on a militant stronghold in the occupied West Bank on Monday. Palestinian officials stated that at least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens more were injured. Israel conducted the strike using drones and deployed hundreds of troops in a significant military operation. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that 50 people, including 10 in critical condition, were wounded.

In response to the attack, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, stated, “Our Palestinian people will not kneel, will not surrender, will not raise the white flag, and will remain steadfast on their land in the face of this brutal aggression.”

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, a spokesperson for the Israeli army, clarified that their intention is not to hold ground but rather to destroy and confiscate weapons. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Telegram that they are conducting a focused counterterrorism operation in Jenin, targeting a camp allegedly occupied by terrorists.

Israeli troops entered the Jenin refugee camp on Monday, and it remains unknown when the operation will conclude. Prior to the operation, the IDF posted a video on Twitter, emphasizing that the Jenin camp is a hotbed of terrorism and serves as a main base for various terrorist organizations involved in weapon manufacturing and distribution.

According to the IDF video, the military operation aims to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in the Jenin camp, marking the largest Israeli campaign in the West Bank in nearly 20 years.

Videos circulating online depict Israeli forces destroying streets in Jenin, hindering the access of ambulances and emergency vehicles, according to Palestinian health authorities.

This incident is part of a surge in violence between militant groups and Israeli forces this year, with tit-for-tat exchanges becoming more frequent. Last month, Israel launched a series of airstrikes in Gaza targeting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group in response to rocket strikes from the same group.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline coalition has raised concerns about escalating violence between Israel and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
