In Jerusalem, Israeli lawmakers are currently engaged in a debate over a bill that aims to limit the powers of the Supreme Court. This discussion comes as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition’s efforts to overhaul the country’s judicial system. The judicial reform was temporarily halted in March due to anti-government protests and negotiations with opposition parties. However, negotiations proved unsuccessful, prompting Netanyahu to revive some of the proposed legislation.

The previously proposed changes included restrictions on the court’s ability to rule against the government, which led to widespread demonstrations prior to the suspension. In fact, just last Saturday, activists against the overhaul even blocked a major highway in Tel Aviv. While coalition lawmakers have promised a softer version of the bill compared to the previous proposals, the opposition remains concerned about the potential for corruption.
