Israel and Hamas Await Hostage Lists Ahead of Truce Expiry

A Palestinian official reveals positive outlook over extending the truce, but no decision has been reached. On the other hand, an Israeli official emphasizes that Hamas must fulfill the condition of providing a list of ten more people to continue the truce beyond Monday.

Hamas, in response, has expressed intentions to secure more hostages in Gaza to extend the ceasefire. Meanwhile, the EU’s chief diplomat, Borrell, stresses the need for a credible prospect of statehood for Palestinians and halting Israel’s settlement construction.

Reports have indicated concerns on both sides regarding the lists of hostages and prisoners set to be released on Monday, the last day of the temporary ceasefire. Qatari mediators are said to be working to address these issues and prevent any delays.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office has received the potential final list of hostages expected to be released. However, the evaluation process is still underway and further details will be disclosed in due course.

Hamas has stated its desire to extend the truce. The group recently freed 58 individuals, including a 4-year-old Israeli-American girl. As part of the agreement, Israel released 39 teenage Palestinian prisoners. President Joe Biden expressed hope for extending the truce through the gradual release of hostages, emphasizing the goodwill Israel has demonstrated.

U.S. officials responded by underscoring the inhumane conditions endured by the 4-year-old hostage, Abigail Edan, who had witnessed her parents being killed by Hamas. Biden noted that once the truce ends, Israel aims to return “with full force” to achieve its objectives.

The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, echoed the sentiment that the ceasefire marks an important milestone, but emphasized the necessity of additional measures to address the crisis. He reiterated concerns over the risk of reconquering Gaza and outlined the importance of establishing a Palestinian state for regional stability.
