Is Your Favorite Brand on The List? Unveiling the UK’s ‘Dirty Dozen’ Responsible for the Highest Plastic and Packaging Pollution

New data has revealed the ‘Dirty Dozen’ brands in the UK responsible for the majority of plastic and packaging pollution, with The Coca-Cola Company topping the list. Surfers Against Sewage conducted the research and found that Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and PepsiCo are the worst offenders. The study involved 4,240 volunteers who collected 30,745 individual items between June 2022 and June 2023. A staggering 36% of the rubbish was found to come from just 327 brands, with Coca-Cola alone accounting for 1,820 items. Surfers Against Sewage is calling on these companies to reduce plastic packaging and take responsibility for their products’ lifecycle. Additionally, they suggest implementing a deposit return scheme for all drinks containers to further reduce plastic pollution. Figures show that 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean each year, and if action isn’t taken, there will be more plastic than fish by 2050. Plastic pollution is causing severe damage to ecosystems and wildlife, making it crucial for companies to address their impact.
