Is Your Child Running a Temperature? Learn How to Spot Fever Symptoms – Orange County Register

Are you familiar with the discomfort of a fever? This common condition occurs when the body’s temperature rises above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit and is often a sign that your immune system is actively fighting off an infection.

If your child is experiencing a high temperature, it’s important to be vigilant for certain signs, according to Dr. Tina Ardon, a knowledgeable Mayo Clinic family medicine physician.

Dr. Ardon emphasizes that fever alone doesn’t always require medical treatment. However, she advises parents to monitor their child closely if they exhibit additional symptoms or are not drinking enough fluids. Coughing or vomiting may also warrant a doctor’s attention to rule out any underlying health issues.

In the case of babies younger than 3 months old running a fever, immediate medical care is essential. For older children, if a fever persists for three days without improvement or if other concerning symptoms arise, it’s recommended to contact your child’s healthcare provider.

When it comes to providing comfort for your child during a fever…

“…you can try using a cold rag on their forehead or giving them a cool, tepid bath, which may help them feel better,” suggests Dr. Ardon. “For children ages six months and older, medications like ibuprofen can be used to alleviate discomfort and reduce fever. It is crucial to ensure that you are administering the correct dosage for your child’s weight. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician or family doctor for appropriate dosing instructions.”
