Is this Michael Caine’s Final Film? Get the Inside Scoop!

Michael Caine made his acting debut just three years after Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne. After a career spanning nearly seven decades, it seems that The Great Escaper may be his final film. In an interview with the Telegraph, the iconic British actor, now 90 years old, stated, “I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly. I sort of am retired now.” While Caine previously announced that the 2021 film Best Sellers would be his last, according to Variety, he decided to delay his retirement after being captivated by the script of The Great Escaper. The film tells the true story of how 89-year-old Royal Navy veteran Bernard “Bernie” Jordan escaped his retirement home to travel to France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Caine told the Telegraph in a recent interview, featured on Deadline, “With COVID and all that, I hadn’t done a picture for three years, and I thought I was finished. But I just loved the character of Bernie. I suddenly did it—and had such a wonderful time.” While the role presented challenges due to Caine’s difficulty walking, the capable actor was provided with a walking stick to assist him. Director Oliver Parker commented on the experience, saying, “We were careful to ensure that Michael wasn’t working too hard. For him to have returned to acting after not having made a film in a while, and in the way he did, was quite a thing.”

Parker praised Caine’s performance in The Great Escaper, stating that the actor was able to convey his vulnerabilities. “I’ve rarely seen him playing a character that has such frailty,” the director remarked. While there has been speculation about Caine reprising his role as Arthur Tressler in the upcoming film Now You See Me 3, it remains uncertain if the movie will ever be made, according to Collider. Regardless, Caine is content with his career and the possibility of retiring. He reflects, “I’m quite happy. I didn’t die at 9, or 19 or 29. I’m 90, and I’ve had the best possible life I could have thought of.” (Read more Michael Caine stories.)
