IS Leader Killed Following Drone Harassment

The Defense Department reported on Sunday that a US drone strike in Syria killed a leader of the Islamic State group, Usamah al-Muhajir. The strike took place shortly after the same MQ-9 Reaper drones were harassed by Russian military jets in the western part of the country. Three Reapers were flying overhead searching for the militant on Friday when they faced harassment from Russian aircraft for about two hours. The anonymous military official, who spoke to the AP, stated that al-Muhajir was killed while riding a motorcycle in the Aleppo region.

It has been reported that al-Muhajir, who typically operated in the east, was present in northwest Syria at the time of the strike. The military has not provided any details on how they confirmed his identity. However, no civilians were believed to have been killed in the strike, although reports suggest that a civilian may have been injured. This incident marked the third consecutive day of Russian fighter jets conducting unsafe and harassing flights around American drones in the region.

In recent times, US forces have intensified raids on suspected Islamic State members in Syria, including those who sought refuge under the protection of rebels supported by Turkey, as per The Guardian. It is suspected that many of these individuals were planning attacks abroad. The head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, Rear Adm Oleg Gurinov, expressed concerns about the drone flights over northern Syria, describing them as “systematic violations of protocols” aimed at avoiding any military conflicts.
