Iowa enacts law banning abortions after 6 weeks

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, a Republican, recently signed a new abortion ban into law in the state, effectively making most abortions illegal after about six weeks of pregnancy.

This ban, which has taken immediate effect, further restricts access to abortion in the Midwest, where it is already heavily limited.

Reynolds expressed her utmost pride in signing this bill into law during the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa.

The ban was passed by the Republican-dominated state legislature earlier this week following an all-day special session. However, the law has already been met with a legal challenge.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and the ACLU of Iowa swiftly filed a lawsuit in district court less than 12 hours after the bill’s passage on Tuesday.

A similar law was passed in the state in 2018, but it was halted by a court due to the continued validity of Roe v. Wade. Last month, the state Supreme Court was tied in a 3-3 deadlock over allowing the law to be enforced.

In neighboring states such as Missouri, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, abortion is mostly banned, although the Wisconsin law is currently facing challenges.

The new Iowa law prohibits abortion once fetal cardiac activity is detected via ultrasound, which typically occurs around six weeks of pregnancy. There are limited exceptions for cases involving the life and health of the woman, as well as for certain survivors of rape and incest, provided the cases are reported to law enforcement. Additionally, exceptions are made for fetal abnormalities that are incompatible with life.

Reynolds signed the bill at the Family Leadership Summit, where former Fox News host Tucker Carlson was conducting interviews with various GOP candidates for the 2024 election, including Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas.
