Introducing Mattel’s Eccentric Barbie: The Doll That Gives Off Playfully Overused Vibes

If you were a fan of Barbie dolls as a child, you probably had that one doll that was always the odd one out – the “weird” Barbie covered in marker and makeup, with an unconventional haircut and mismatched clothes. Despite not fitting the image of a perfect doll, she played a crucial role in Greta Gerwig’s groundbreaking movie. And now, Mattel has officially introduced her as a character.

Mattel stated, “If anyone knows how to keep it weird, it’s Weird Barbie.” This debut marked the unveiling of the signature Barbie.

The doll is dressed just like Kate McKinnon’s character in the live-action “Barbie” film, featuring a pink dress adorned with abstract shapes and colors, vibrant green snakeskin boots, and boldly chopped-up hair. And of course, she’s doing the splits.

Mattel described her as having short tousled hair and facial markings to imitate a doll that has been played with a bit too much. The movie’s Instagram account added, “Time to get weird.”

The doll, priced at $50, is currently available for pre-order until August 18th at 11:59 p.m. PT. Mattel has stated that it will be shipped on or before May 31, 2024. It comes with collectible film packaging and a certificate of authenticity.

The release of the new movie revolving around one of the world’s most beloved toy characters has made entertainment history. Within just three weeks of its debut, “Barbie” surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales. This achievement makes director Greta Gerwig the first woman director to reach this milestone, surpassing the previous record set by director Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman” in 2017.
