Harry Kane’s debut spoiled as RB Leipzig shock Bayern Munich to claim Supercup | A shock victory in European club football

Harry Kane made his much-anticipated debut for Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup, but unfortunately, he missed out on securing his first trophy as RB Leipzig emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena. The English captain came off the bench in the 63rd minute, replacing Mathys Tel, but had limited opportunities to make an impact. RB Leipzig’s victory was largely attributed to Dani Olmo’s exceptional hat-trick performance.

Kane, sporting the No. 9 shirt for the first time after training with his new teammates earlier that morning, received a thunderous welcome from the Bayern fans as he stepped onto the pitch. However, the team was already trailing 2-0 due to Olmo’s double in the first half.

The lackluster performance from the hosts left their coach, Thomas Tuchel, extremely frustrated. He expressed his disappointment, feeling that the team had not made progress during their four-week pre-season. Tuchel said, “It is a significant problem because it feels as though we have made no progress in the past four weeks. I cannot comprehend it. In every aspect, it was simply not enough. I have no idea why. Our form and attitude heading into the game did not translate to our performance on the pitch. It is concerning because there is such a glaring disparity.”

Spain international Olmo capitalized on Bayern’s defensive mistakes in the third minute to score the opening goal. He added another with a brilliant flick and turn just before halftime, leaving defenders in his wake. Bayern came close to equalizing when Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan almost scored an own goal, hitting the post while trying to clear the ball.

Despite Bayern’s wastefulness in front of goal and squandering several opportunities, Tuchel introduced Kane in the 63rd minute to a thunderous applause from the Bayern faithful. However, Kane had limited involvement, touching the ball only three times. Olmo then completed his hat-trick just four minutes later from the penalty spot, securing the first title of the season for his team.

“It was an incredible night. We played well over the entire 90 minutes, maintaining possession throughout,” said Olmo. “I believe it was a flawless game. We expected to win, and lifting this trophy is the best way to start the season. We aim to be among the top teams with our competitive squad.”

Bayern, who kick off their Bundesliga campaign against Werder Bremen on Friday, will be hoping that Kane’s addition to the team will significantly improve their ability to convert chances into goals. This has been a problem for them since the departure of Robert Lewandowski last year.
