Introducing Kia’s Trio of Trendy Electric Vehicles: Unveiling the Latest in Style and Performance

Kia introduces two new concept cars, further expanding their future electric vehicle lineup with a compact SUV and a battery-powered sedan.

Unveiled at Kia’s ‘EV Day’ event in South Korea, these concepts accompany the upcoming production version of the EV5, an electric compact SUV. This move aligns with Kia’s goal of diversifying its electric car offerings, which already include the EV6 hatch and EV9, a full-size SUV.

Kia’s “EV for all” strategy aims to significantly expand their electric car lineup, with the goal of selling one million electric vehicles annually by 2026, and 1.6 million units per year by 2030. The company also plans to introduce a smaller car, the EV2, specifically designed for the European market.

Although initially intended for the Chinese market, Kia has now confirmed global availability for the EV5. The company also stated that their future EV lineup will range from $30,000 to $80,000, including models like the EV5, EV4, and EV3 priced between $35,000 and $50,000. Kia is expected to introduce an EV2 (and potentially an EV1) at a lower price point.

The EV5, built on the E-GMP platform shared with Hyundai and Genesis electric cars, features a 64 kWh battery pack, a 160 kW (251 horsepower) motor, and an estimated range of 530 km (330 miles) based on China’s CLTC test cycle. A long-range version will offer an 88 kWh battery, all-wheel-drive with two electric motors, 230 kW (308 hp) combined output, and a target range of 650 km (404 miles). The E-GMP platform’s operational voltage of 800 volts enables fast charging, with the battery reaching 30 to 80 percent capacity in just 27 minutes.

Kia plans to introduce a high-performance version called the EV5 GT, promising an engaging driving experience similar to the current EV6 GT’s 580 horsepower, 0-60 mph acceleration in five seconds, and even a “drift mode.”

The EV5’s minimalist interior features two 12.3-inch digital displays – one for the driver and another for the infotainment system. Below these displays are four “hidden hard keys” for controlling ventilation and cabin temperature, replacing the need for 17 buttons. Additionally, the EV5, like the EV6, offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, allowing the battery to power external devices and share surplus energy with the grid where infrastructure permits.

Kia also presented the EV3 concept, which embodies the technology, practicality, and design of the flagship EV9 SUV in a compact form. Although currently a concept, the EV3’s design shares similarities with the EV9, suggesting that the production version will closely resemble the concept. Notable design features include a cab-forward stance, a long sloping roofline, squared wheel arches with asymmetrical angles, a wraparound windshield, and a floating roof design created by a disconnected C pillar.

Technical details for the EV3 have yet to be revealed, but it is expected to utilize the same modular E-GMP platform as its Kia and Hyundai counterparts. The EV3’s cabin shares similarities with the EV5, offering a spacious layout, a single infotainment display, and the extensive use of color-matched fabric across the doors and dashboard.

The EV4, a concept electric sedan, aims to rival Tesla with its innovative design. Kia describes the EV4 as a completely new type of EV saloon, highlighting its low nose, elongated profile, sloping roofline, and angular surfacing that reflects Kia’s modern EV design language. The interior of the EV4 concept closely resembles that of the EV3, featuring the same infotainment display, fabric elements, and ambient lighting. However, certain design elements may be refined or modified before the production version.

The EV4 concept introduces the ‘Mind Modes’ function, which adjusts ambient lighting and ventilation patterns throughout the cabin. Different modes, such as ‘Perform’ and ‘Serenity,’ create varying atmospheres, with the latter providing a relaxed ambience for reflection and restoration, utilizing digital graphics.

While details regarding performance, pricing, and availability of these concept cars are currently unknown, Kia’s ambition to sell one million EVs annually suggests that production versions will be unveiled in the near future.
