Intensified Conflict: Israel Bombards Gaza in Confrontation with Hamas, Surge in Death Tolls on Both Sides

The death toll in the Israel-Hamas war is continuously rising, four days after the unexpected assault by the Hamas militant group on Israel from Gaza. This has led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare that “we are at war.”

President Biden has condemned the assault as “an act of sheer evil” and stated that more than 1,000 civilians, including at least 14 Americans, have been “slaughtered” in Israel. He revealed that American citizens are also among those being held captive by Hamas. The United States has long designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, as it controls the Gaza Strip.

In his address from the White House on Tuesday, President Biden described the experience of the people of Israel as “pure, unadulterated evil” at the hands of Hamas, emphasizing the brutality of the situation. He spoke of parents sacrificing themselves to protect their children, shocking reports of infants being killed, and entire families being slain. The president mentioned young people being massacred at a music festival meant to celebrate peace, and the suffering of women who were raped, assaulted, and treated as trophies.

The president stressed the unequivocal support of the United States for Israel in this challenging time, emphasizing that Israel will receive the assistance it needs to protect its citizens and respond to the attack. He reaffirmed that there is no justification or excuse for terrorism.

According to IDF international spokesperson Lt. Col. (Res.) Jonathan Conricus, in addition to those killed in Israel, around 2,500 more people have been reported injured. Among the dead are over 250 Israelis who were attacked at the Supernova music festival near the border with Gaza, where militants opened fire on the crowd.

Israeli officials have also claimed that Hamas fighters have taken over 100 hostages, including women, children, and the elderly, who are believed to be held captive in Gaza. The exact number of missing Americans is unknown, as stated by the White House.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 765 people in the Gaza Strip. Among the casualties are 140 children, and an additional 4,000 people have been wounded.

The coordinated and multi-front attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, which is under Hamas control, occurred nearly 50 years after the 1973 Yom Kippur War. This incident represents a significant escalation in the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
