Inmates in Prison Deescalate Violence as Larry Nassar’s Attacker is Pulled Away following Stabbing

  • Former Team USA doctor Larry Nassar was convicted of sexually abusing women gymnasts.
  • Nassar was stabbed in prison after he made a comment about wanting to see “girls” at Wimbledon.
  • A prison union leader told Insider that inmates had to intervene to separate Nassar’s attacker.

According to a prison union leader, prison inmates had to intervene to separate Larry Nassar’s attacker after he was stabbed multiple times. Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics doctor, was convicted in 2017 of sexually abusing multiple female gymnasts, including Simone Biles and McKayla Maroney. He is currently serving a prison sentence of up to 175 years at the US Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida. The stabbing occurred after Nassar made a lewd comment about wanting to see “girls” at Wimbledon.

Joe Rojas, a regional vice president for the Council of Prison Local and a longtime employee at Sumterville federal prison, confirmed the incident and stated that multiple inmates jumped in to pull the attacker away. Nassar sustained stab wounds to the neck, back, and chest, resulting in a collapsed lung. As reported by NBC News, Nassar’s condition is stable as of Monday.

Prison staff usually wait for backup before intervening in fights, as it could be a ploy to attack employees. A spokesperson for the US Penitentiary Coleman II has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Rojas revealed that Nassar was housed in a specialized unit for those with mental illnesses and pedophiles. He expressed surprise at the attack, as inmates in this unit typically protect one another and maintain a quiet and non-social demeanor. The New York Times reported that Nassar was in a general population unit at the time of the attack, according to an official familiar with the incident.

This is not the first time Nassar has been attacked in prison. He was previously assaulted in May 2018 at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, before being transferred to the Coleman penitentiary in Oklahoma.
