Ingenious Strategy: Marcos’ Decision to Distribute Seized Rice Stocks to Impoverished Communities, Outsmarting Rice Smugglers

Yamsuan: Marcos' move to give seized rice stocks to poor outwits smugglers

Bicol Saro Partylist Representative Brian Raymund Yamsuan hailed President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for his clever strategy to distribute confiscated smuggled rice stocks to impoverished families in Zamboanga. Yamsuan praised the President’s move, which not only sends a strong message to smugglers and hoarders, but also provides assistance to those most affected by their illegal activities.

Yamsuan, a representative for the Bicol region including more than 700,000 small farmers and fisherfolk, highlighted that President Marcos Jr.’s action protects Filipino farmers from unfair competition created by the flooding of smuggled rice in the market, which lowers the prices of their produce.

“By seizing the rice stocks, the President has inflicted a costly blow to smugglers and hoarders. They can never recover their investments. The smuggled rice that has been cooked cannot be retrieved. Smugglers may lose, but our farmers and fellow countrymen win,” Yamsuan stated.

The distribution of the smuggled sacks of rice to beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Norte was part of President Marcos Jr.’s decision to distribute a total of 4,000 sacks of rice worth P42 million that were seized by the Bureau of Customs (BOC). These sacks were confiscated from a warehouse in Barangay San Jose Gusu in Zamboanga City. The government claimed ownership of the stocks after the warehouse operator failed to provide sufficient explanation regarding their importation, tariffs, and taxes.

During the distribution event, President Marcos Jr. also provided additional assistance to the Zamboanga provinces, including agricultural and fisheries grants from the Philippine Rural Development Project Investment for Rural Enterprises and Agricultural and Fisheries Productivity (PRDP I-REAP) of the Department of Agriculture (DA), financial grants from DA KADIWA worth P4 million, livelihood assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and assistance certificates from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

According to Representative Yamsuan, President Marcos Jr.’s decisive action benefits both farmers and poor families and serves as punishment for those who have made their lives difficult.
