Indio Resident Admits Guilt in Armed Robbery Case, Receives 3-Year Probation Sentence

A 19-year-old man entered a guilty plea on Thursday for the robbery of an individual who responded to an advertisement for the sale of an Xbox gaming console. As a result, he has been sentenced to three years of probation.

In the Larson Justice Center in Indio, Brian Lee Craig from Indio pleaded guilty to the following charges: robbery, possession of a controlled substance for sale, armed criminal action, and the possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Additionally, he admitted to being armed with a firearm, which further enhanced his sentence.

According to court records, Craig’s probation will last until June 28, 2026. The charges of possessing a controlled substance for sale and possession of an assault weapon were dropped as part of his plea agreement.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a robbery at 7:52 p.m. on December 29, 2022. The victim had met Craig and two other unidentified suspects in Indian Wells to complete the sale of the gaming console. It was during this encounter that the victim was robbed at gunpoint, as described by Sgt. Travis Mountz from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Mountz recounted that once the suspects received the payment from the victim, who had entered their vehicle, one of the suspects in the back seat brandished a short-barrel rifle. “The suspect then aimed the gun at the victim, instructing him to exit the vehicle or he would shoot him in the head,” Mountz said. “The victim complied and got out of the vehicle.”

After the robbery, the suspects fled the scene. Deputies later located the suspect vehicle at a nearby gas station on Indio Boulevard. Craig was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Following the discovery of the suspect vehicle, deputies from the Special Enforcement Team executed a search warrant. They uncovered an illicit short-barrel rifle and narcotics packaged for sale, according to Mountz.
