Indie Folk Artist, Sufjan Stevens, courageously shares battle with Guillain-Barré Syndrome & inspiring journey of regaining mobility

Indie singer-songwriter, Sufjan Stevens, recently made the announcement that he is currently relearning how to walk after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease. The talented artist, whose unique name is pronounced as “SOOF-yawn,” chose to share this news with his fans through a heartfelt Tumblr post. Stevens, who is 48 years old, also revealed why he was unable to promote his upcoming album, “Javelin,” which is now scheduled for release on October 6.

According to the post, Stevens woke up one morning last month unable to walk. He described the sensation as a lack of feeling and mobility in his hands, arms, and legs, along with a tingling numbness. Concerned, he was driven to the emergency room by his brother and underwent a series of tests including MRIs, EMGs, cat scans, X-rays, spinal taps, and echo-cardiograms. It was through these tests that neurologists were able to diagnose him with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder.

The singer went on to explain that the disease can be treated through immuno-hemoglobin infusions administered over the course of five days, as long as it does not affect vital organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. Stevens expressed his gratitude, calling the process “very scary” but mentioning that it was successful. He spent about two weeks in a medical/surgical unit where doctors worked tirelessly to keep him alive and stabilize his condition. In his own words, he acknowledges that he owes his life to the dedicated medical professionals who cared for him during this difficult time.

On September 8, Stevens was transferred to an acute rehabilitation center where he is now undergoing intensive physical and occupational therapy in order to regain his ability to walk. He acknowledges that the process is slow, but remains hopeful as he learns that most individuals with Guillain-Barré syndrome are able to regain their mobility within a year through their own efforts and determination. Stevens remains optimistic and is eager to return to the stage and continue creating music for his loyal fans.

Sufjan Stevens, known for his beautiful song “Mystery of Love,” which was featured in the 2017 film “Call Me by Your Name,” has gained critical acclaim for his albums “Illinois” and “Carrie & Lowell.” His talent has been recognized with nominations for both an Oscar and a Grammy.
