The Best Hotel in the World: Passalacqua on Italy’s Lake Como
The 50 Best organization has declared Passalacqua, an 18th-century villa situated on the picturesque Lake Como in Italy, as the best hotel in the world. This announcement was made during the unveiling of “The World’s 50 Best Hotels” in London. Passalacqua was once the home of renowned composer Vincenzo Bellini and is surrounded by seven acres of stunning terraced gardens. Rates for this luxurious villa hotel begin at $1,300 per night, as stated by the 50 Best organization.
This is the first time that the 50 Best organization has ventured into hotel rankings, having previously focused on ranking “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” and “The World’s 50 Best Bars”. The rankings are determined through nominations from a diverse panel of 580 anonymous voters, including travel journalists, hoteliers, and luxury travelers from around the globe.

France claims the most hotels on the list, with six properties scattered throughout the country, while Italy holds five, although none in Rome. Paris, London, and Bangkok stand out as the cities with the highest number of hotels included on the list.
The 50 Best organization also recognized outstanding hotels in specific categories. Singita Lodges in Kruger National Park received the “Eco Hotel” award for its pioneering efforts in eco-tourism, while England’s The Newt was honored with the “Best Boutique” hotel award.
Among the newcomers, Capella Bangkok was named the “Best New Hotel,” and Utah’s The Lodge at Blue Sky, which opened in 2019, was designated as the “One to Watch” due to its potential to break into the top 50 list in the future.
The voting system employed by the 50 Best organization involves voters from nine regions worldwide. Voters are asked to name their top seven hotels they have stayed in over the past two years, in order of preference. Rules restrict voters from nominating more than three properties within the same hotel group. There are no limitations on the size, facilities, or location of the nominated hotels.
