Increased Sales of Nazi Artifacts in Australia Due to Pending Legislation

The impending ban on selling Nazi artifacts in Australia has sparked a disturbing trend, referred to as a “repulsive phenomenon” by an anti-defamation official. Buyers are rushing to purchase offensive reminders of a dark and horrific period in history. Jamey Blewitt, the owner of JB Military Antiques in Western Australia, has been inundated with calls, emails, and sales, unlike anything he has experienced in his 14 years as a dealer. He describes the situation as akin to people rushing to fill up their tanks before a fuel shortage. His store sells over 200 items, including badges, helmets, uniforms, daggers, medals, and caps, most of which bear the swastika symbol.

Blewitt clarifies that his customers are history and military enthusiasts, not neo-Nazis. He states that if anyone is offended by the swastika symbol, they can simply place a sticker over it. Blewitt attributes the surge in sales to the pending legislation, which aims to ban the sale and public display of Nazi symbols. However, private ownership and non-profit transfers of memorabilia will still be permitted. The Australian attorney general explains that the rise in far-right activities has necessitated this legislation. While the number of neo-Nazis in the country remains relatively small, it is a cause for concern. Mark Dreyfus expresses hope that their numbers will decrease and eventually disappear.

An auction house recently faced backlash after selling signed pictures of Hitler, Himmler, and Rommel. The sale, titled “Get it Before History is Banned & Erased,” included items purportedly stained with blood. The auction house’s director defended the sale by stating its legality and revealing that many politicians were among the buyers. The chair of Australia’s Anti-Defamation Commission criticizes these sales, describing the rush to profit from such items as morally reprehensible. Dr. Dvir Abramovich urges all auction houses involved in trading these horrific objects to feel ashamed of their actions. (Read more Australia stories.)
