In-N-Out enforces mask ban for employees across 5 states

Starting next month, In-N-Out Burger, a popular fast-food chain, will prohibit its employees from wearing masks in five out of the seven states where it operates.

Leaked internal memos revealed that In-N-Out employees in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas will no longer be allowed to wear masks beginning on August 14th. However, those who have a valid medical reason for wearing a mask can do so with a medical note. The company exempts employees in California, where its headquarters are located, and Oregon, due to respective state laws.

The company stated in its memos that the new policy aims to “enhance clear and effective communication with customers and among employees.”

Employees who receive permission for medical reasons will be required to wear a company-provided N-95 mask, according to the memos.

This is not the first time In-N-Out has implemented controversial policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2021, a San Francisco In-N-Out store was temporarily closed by health authorities at Fisherman’s Wharf for not checking customers’ COVID-19 vaccination status, as mandated by local laws. Arnie Wensinger, the chain’s chief legal and business officer, stated, “We refuse to become the vaccination police for any government.” In the same month, an In-N-Out store in Pleasant Hill, California, was fined for not checking customers’ vaccination status.

CBS News reached out to In-N-Out for a comment on the latest policy but did not receive an immediate response.
