Apple’s iOS 17 will introduce significant changes to the phone app on the iPhone.

The updated Phone app in iOS 17 offers real-time voicemail transcriptions, the option to choose contact posters as display images for dialing contacts, and an enhanced user interface with a more prominent font.

However, one change in particular will require longtime iPhone users to adjust their muscle memory. The “End Call” button has been relocated in beta versions of iOS 17, now positioned in the lower right-hand corner instead of the previous center placement in the bottom third of the screen.

In iOS 17, the red “End Call” button is situated between a button for initiating FaceTime calls and another button for accessing the iPhone’s dial pad.

Given this modification, it is easy to imagine users with muscle memory of years accidentally pressing the area where the button used to be. Several individuals have taken to social media to express that they may need time to adapt to the new button placement.

Currently, iOS 17 is only available in beta form for those willing to assist Apple in bug detection, and it will be released to the public in the fall alongside the announcement of new iPhone models.

This is not the first time that Apple has rearranged long-standing user interfaces to ensure key buttons are conveniently located closer to the bottom of the phone, especially as screens continue to increase in size.

In the beta version of iOS 15, released in 2021, Apple made adjustments to its Safari browser, placing the URL bar at the bottom and implementing visual changes. However, by the final release in September, Apple had made further adjustments, reverting some changes and providing users with the option to return the URL bar to the top of the page.

When asked about the possibility of further changes or customization options for the new call screen, an Apple representative did not respond.
