In a recent survey, a record 69% of respondents expressed support for the legality of first-trimester abortions.

According to a recent Gallup poll, a significant 69 percent of Americans are now supporters of legalizing abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy. The percentage of people who support abortion access in the second and third trimesters also reached a record high, though it still lags considerably behind the levels of support for first-trimester abortions. While 37 percent of respondents favored the legalization of abortions in the second trimester, 22 percent approved of it happening in the third trimester. 52 percent of Americans identify as pro-choice while 44 percent identify as pro-life. Additionally, 52 percent of Americans view abortion as morally acceptable, and 41 percent view it as morally wrong. When asked about the legality of abortion under certain circumstances, 49 percent of respondents believed that it must be available only in a few or no circumstances at all, whereas 47 percent supported legalization in most or all situations. The poll, conducted from May 1-24, took into account the opinion of 1,011 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of 4 percent. Last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade’s ruling was disclosed to the public approximately a year ago.
