Important Questions to Ask Your Romantic Partner Before Traveling Together

  • I am a travel reporter who navigates the challenging dating scene of New York City.
  • Prior to considering traveling with a partner, there are a few important factors I need to know.
  • One crucial question I ask is: Will you clap when the plane lands?

I firmly believe that traveling with someone reveals a lot about a romantic relationship.

Being a travel reporter and single, I have pondered extensively on the dynamics of traveling with a partner. Through my experiences, I have established certain criteria that are non-negotiable. The last thing I want is to enter a relationship only to discover that my partner is someone who claps when the plane lands.

To avoid the heartbreaking and potentially embarrassing end of a relationship, here’s what I need to know about someone before we embark on a vacation together.

1. Will you applaud when the plane lands?

Clapping after landing is acceptable in two situations: if the flight was particularly rough and life-altering, or if you are a baby. If you genuinely felt your life was in danger during the flight and others initiated the applause, you can join in with some light clapping. However, please refrain from initiating it yourself. As for babies, their clapping is cute. But if a grown adult claps at the end of the flight without these circumstances, it might be too embarrassing to overlook.

2. Do you immediately stand up when the plane reaches the gate?

Avoid doing that! It never fails to amaze me how people jump up from their seats as soon as the seatbelt sign is turned off. Look, I understand that for those with tight connections, being among the first to disembark is crucial. However, for everyone else, where exactly are you rushing to? Dating someone who exhibits this behavior is definitely a turn-off and potentially a dealbreaker.

3. Will you abandon me for first class?

This summer seems to be filled with stories of partners leaving their spouses, and even worse, their spouses and children, in economy while they enjoy the luxury of a first-class seat. Personally, this is a situation I cannot tolerate. Regardless of the class we’re in, we should be in it together. Either we both relish the comfort of business class or endure the cramped space of economy. But if my boyfriend chooses to book a first-class ticket for himself and leaves me in coach, it’s an immediate end to the relationship.

4. Window, middle, or aisle?

I have always been a fan of the window seat. Gazing out the window and daydreaming or using the wall for a quick nap are some of my favorite pastimes during a flight. I am open to my future partner preferring the middle or aisle seat, as it allows us to sit together without disagreements over who gets the coveted window seat. Alternatively, if he also prefers the window seat, he can graciously let me have it because we are in love or something along those lines.

5. How will you behave on a flight and treat the cabin crew?

This summer has seen an increase in unruly passenger behavior, with incidents of harassment towards staff and even “shouting matches” with the crew. Before traveling together, it is crucial for me to understand a person’s temperament and basic decency to ensure they won’t cause a flight diversion due to their inappropriate behavior. In simpler terms, inform me upfront if you are prone to throwing tantrums over in-flight meals.

6. Do you have TSA PreCheck?

To be fair, I do not have it yet. However, this is not solely about expediting security procedures. As E! News host Justin Sylvester recently highlighted, having TSA PreCheck might indicate that you have undergone a background check and are not a potential threat. According to the TSA’s website, PreCheck enrollees undergo recurrent criminal history vetting to maintain their status. So, besides the convenience of faster security clearance, it also suggests that you have a relatively clean record.
