Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, “Oppenheimer,” is his largest project to date. In an interview with Collider, the director revealed that the film’s reel is so massive that it barely fits into IMAX’s projectors.
“Oppenheimer” is a biographical thriller featuring Cillian Murphy and has a runtime of three hours, making it Nolan’s longest film. The reel consists of 11 miles of film stock and weighs 600 pounds, emphasizing the grandeur of the production.
The immense size of the film reel led Nolan to question IMAX about its compatibility with their projectors.
In an interview published on July 10, Nolan stated, “I presented them with a 180-page script. That equates to a three-hour movie. We examined it together, assessed the platters, and concluded that it was technically feasible.”
Nolan added, “They informed me that this is the absolute limit because the platter arm is now touching the reel. Therefore, this is likely the maximum run time for an IMAX film print.”
Nolan has been a devoted user of the IMAX film format since filming “The Dark Knight” in 2008. He continued to utilize IMAX cameras in his recent works, including “Tenet” and “Dunkirk.”
“Oppenheimer” is scheduled for release on July 21, 2023.
