Ignite the Flame | A Perspective from the Inquirer

In our societies, there are always noble causes worth supporting. Whether it’s a simple advocacy or a grand mission to uplift the marginalized, there are countless opportunities to make a positive impact in the world. However, it’s important to recognize the risks involved in pouring all our energy, emotions, and resources into these endeavors. There comes a point when our bodies and spirits become weary, and we may question if our efforts are truly worth it.

This is where reflection becomes crucial. Taking a step back from the chaos and frenzy allows us to reevaluate our goals and recharge our spirits. Without reflection, we continue at a relentless pace, heightening our emotions, even if they are heavy and negative. This can lead to burnout, fatal mistakes, or even tragic outcomes.

The world we live in today is facing immense challenges. From the prolonged pandemic to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, global tensions are at an all-time high. Weaker countries like the Philippines are particularly vulnerable, relying heavily on external support and struggling to meet their basic needs. The global atmosphere is volatile, with violence lurking and threatening to disrupt our lives. It is crucial that we prepare ourselves, become more productive, and strive for self-sufficiency, even as we care for the weakest among us.

Throughout the years, I have been involved in political exercises not for personal gain or entertainment, but because there is a pressing need to address the suffering and marginalization experienced by the majority of our people. However, this path is not without its challenges. Political partisanship often poisons relationships, leading to the loss of friends and even family. In times like these, I seek solace in moments of quiet reflection and find inspiration in the wisdom shared by others.

Renowned author and philosopher Howard Thurman once said, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Similarly, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

These wise words emphasize the importance of looking beyond ourselves and thinking about the impact we have on others and future generations. Thurman encourages us to find what makes us feel alive because the world needs individuals who are passionate and fully engaged. Emerson highlights the significance of our usefulness, honor, and compassion, as these virtues can make a lasting difference. Happiness, then, becomes a natural byproduct of a life well-lived.

Having taken the time to reflect and draw wisdom from others, I feel a renewed sense of purpose. I am determined to rise above the disappointments and exhaustion and seek out the things that make me feel alive. I want to make a difference and be of service to others, always carrying myself with honor and compassion. While there may be liars and thieves who inspire dishonesty and corruption, I believe it is crucial for us to counteract their influence by becoming helpful, honest, and inspiring role models.

It is essential for our individual and collective well-being that the virtues of virtue, productivity, and community spirit prevail over vices such as greed and dependency. The path we take to transform our nation depends on our commitment to doing what is right and doing it well. If we remain dedicated, life itself will guide us day by day.

In the next few decades, the median age of Filipinos will continue to decrease. This presents an opportunity for us to invest in the growth and development of the younger generation, nurturing their productive capacities and guiding them towards strong character. I believe that the three fundamental national virtues highlighted in the recent elections—responsibility, accountability, and heroism—can define the Filipino people and nation.

So, with renewed determination, I commit myself to making a difference, to being useful, and to embodying honor and compassion in all my actions. I believe that through our collective efforts, we can create a new trajectory for our nation, one that uplifts and empowers all its citizens.
