Brooklyn rabbi’s control over Catskills resort town strengthened by recent appeals court ruling

A New York appeals court has rejected an attempt to invalidate a large number of absentee ballots in a local election in the Catskills village of Fleischmanns. The ruling strengthens the influence of Rabbi Abraham Horowitz, who orchestrated a voter registration drive in the area. The court ordered the opening of 81 absentee ballots that had been previously set aside, leading to the victory of the rabbi’s chosen candidates. However, concerns have been raised about the rabbi’s plans to impose strict religious rules on the town and expedite property deals on behalf of the congregation. The court did not address residency challenges but focused on the voter registrations of those who submitted absentee ballots. The case may eventually be taken to the state’s highest court.
