If the Cardinals are open to selling, the Mets should consider pursuing a trade for Nolan Arenado

The New York Mets had big plans for the winter, targeting a perennial All-Star for their third base position. However, they should now consider going after Nolan Arenado, who expressed that he wouldn’t be surprised if the St. Louis Cardinals traded him before the deadline. Both the Cardinals and the Mets have had disappointing seasons and could potentially be sellers this year. Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, may be having a rough season, but his Statcast numbers show that he could improve the Mets’ left side of the infield, alongside Francisco Lindor at shortstop. Offensively, Arenado has a .283/.332/.518 slash line with 19 homers and 62 RBIs. Adding him to a lineup with Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Alvarez could be a game-changer for the Mets. Money won’t be an issue for the Mets, as they were willing to offer Carlos Correa a 12-year, $315 million deal last offseason. However, the Mets’ decision not to sign anyone after the failed Correa deal has left them in need of more power in their lineup. Arenado has a nine-year, $275 million contract that runs through 2027, meaning a team that trades for him would have 4.5 years of control. This could be the optimal situation for the Mets, as it wouldn’t be a long-term commitment like the Manny Machado or Lindor deals. If there are concerns about Arenado’s defense, he could potentially become a full-time designated hitter near the end of his contract. The Mets would need to be willing to part with multiple prospects to make this trade happen. According to a talent evaluator, it may take at least four young players, potentially including Kevin Parada, Alex Ramirez, Mike Vasil, Blade Tidwell, and Brett Baty. If the Mets were to keep Baty, he could shift to a corner outfield role with Arenado on board. However, it may be a difficult sell for the Mets’ front office, as owner Steve Cohen has emphasized the need to develop the farm system. Arenado’s addition could significantly improve the Mets’ chances of making the playoffs this season, and it would give Cohen the bat he desired when pursuing Correa. Ultimately, the Cardinals need to be willing to trade Arenado, and the Mets need to assess the risk of parting with top prospects. Trading for a perennial Gold Glove corner infielder worked out well for the Mets in the past when they acquired Keith Hernandez. Arenado’s potential arrival could have a similar impact on the team.
