Two Canadian seniors who were born in the same rural hospital 67 years ago recently discovered that they had been switched at birth. Richard Beauvais, a commercial fisherman in British Columbia, and Eddy Ambrose, a retired upholsterer in Manitoba, found out about the switch after taking DNA tests. Beauvais originally took the test to learn more about his family’s Indigenous background but was surprised to learn that he had Ukrainian, Ashkenazi Jewish, and Polish ancestry instead. Ambrose, on the other hand, was devastated to learn that he wasn’t genetically tied to the Ukrainian-Canadian family he grew up with.
While Beauvais had a difficult childhood after his father’s death and lived in poverty until being placed in foster care, Ambrose had a happy upbringing in a loving family. Ambrose now feels guilty for not having the same experience as Beauvais and believes that his identity has been robbed from him. Both men, however, admit that they wish they had never found out the truth and are questioning their true identities and how racial heritage shapes them.
